Overview

Equilibrium built state-reconstruction tooling for ZKsync Era, for Matter Labs. The tool reconstructs the entire ZKsync chain using only data published on Ethereum L1. These are the commit blocks the rollup posts to L1, and it validates the reconstructed state against those onchain commitments. It runs against any valid Ethereum JSON-RPC endpoint and can import a snapshot as a starting point.

This is core trust-minimization infrastructure for ZK rollups: it lets anyone independently verify the L2’s state from L1 data alone, without relying on the sequencer or any third party’s view of the chain. Completed in 2023 and released open source.

Deliverables

  • State-reconstruction tool for ZKsync Era (equilibriumco/zksync-state-reconstruct), in Rust, parses the commit blocks published on Ethereum L1 and rebuilds the full L2 state from them.
  • Independent state verification from L1 data: the reconstructed state is validated against the published onchain commitments.
  • Snapshot generation / import: reconstruct from genesis or bootstrap from an imported snapshot, with continuous progress reporting.

Technical highlights

  • Trust-minimized verification: rebuilds ZKsync’s state purely from data available on Ethereum, so the result can be checked independently of the sequencer.
  • L1-driven pipeline: consumes published commit blocks via a standard Ethereum JSON-RPC endpoint; uses Protocol Buffers for snapshot interchange.
  • Built in Rust.
